Marble, Travertine, & Limestone

Natural stone polishing is the process of smoothing and shining the surface of a natural stone, such as granite, marble, limestone, or travertine, using mechanical abrasion and friction techniques.

Here are the basic steps involved in a complete natural stone restoration:

  1. Preparation: Before polishing the stone, it’s important to clean the surface thoroughly and remove any dirt, debris, or stains. This is done using a neutral pH cleaner and and hot water extraction.
  2. Grinding: The next step is to use coarse diamond abrasive pads or grinding discs to remove any scratches, marks, or rough spots on the stone surface. The grinding process is typically done in several stages, starting with the coarsest grit and working up to finer grits.
  3. Honing: Once the grinding is complete, the stone is honed using finer diamond abrasive pads or discs to create a smooth, even surface. Honing also removes any remaining scratches or marks left by the grinding process.
  4. Polishing: After honing, the stone is polished using progressively finer diamond abrasive pads or discs to create a high-gloss, reflective surface. The polishing process can be done with either wet or dry pads, depending on the type of stone and the desired finish.
  5. Sealing: Finally, the stone is sealed to protect it from moisture, stains, and other types of damage. Sealing is an important step in maintaining the beauty and durability of natural stone surfaces.

The most typical service we offer is our Natural Stone Maintence Package which is a clean, 1-2 step maintenance polish, and sealing. This package is great for removing the dirt and soil from your stone and restoring the luster (sheen) back to the floor before resealing using a penetrating sealer. This is not however intended for major scratch or etch removal (a full restoration would be need in that instance).

Overall, natural stone polishing requires skill, expertise, and specialized equipment to achieve the best results. It’s important to work with a professional stone restoration company that has experience in natural stone care and can provide the necessary services to keep your stone surfaces looking their best.
